Annular Tears

SYMPTOMS

Annular tears can cause symptoms that come on suddenly or develop over time. They include weakness in the arms or legs, numbness, tingling, and pain in the neck or back. When you come into the Non-surgical Spine Center for your evaluation, you will undergo imaging and testing to determine the exact cause of your pain.

CAUSES

There are three types of annular tears– radial, peripheral, and concentric. Radial tears begin at the center of the disc and extend through the outer layer. This may cause a hernia. Radial tears are usually caused by aging and may cause disc herniation. Peripheral tears, damage to the outer layers of the disc, are caused by traumatic injury or bone spurs. They can lead to degeneration of the disc. Concentric tears are also caused by injury and are marked by damage between the outer layers of the disc.
